George Bruce

George Bruce

239 Hilltown, Dundee

Mr Bruce's business appears to have started at 20 King Street, Broughty Ferry in 1917. In 1935/36, he opened another shop at 24 Bell Street in Dundee and in 1938/39 opened a third at 239 Hilltown. Obviously, business seemed to be brisk during this period.

The shops appeared to have closed during the war and, after hostilities ended, reopened in the Hilltown only. He remained in business as a framebuilder and cycle agent until 1950 when, according to local trade directories, he was simply known as a "broker". In 1955/56, he was a "licensed broker" and in 1958/59 a "cabinet maker" was in his shop at 239 Hilltown.

This frame is almost certainly pre-war and another great "dump find" It's quite a nice-looking frame but I can't say with all honesty that it's the best built I've ever seen. The mitering on the rear brake bridge is a bit clumsy and the chainstay bridge isn't exactly square to the frame-although it's pretty close! However, none of that matters as it may be the only one in existence and has my name on the head badge...
